Rumerica & Why I'm Voting Blue
It’s Election Day today and I’m nervous. Not sure which way things will go and can’t focus on much else right now. I’ve never been much of a politics follower but since Trump won I’ve been obsessed with it, more for the shit show than policy bc let’s be real there hasn’t been much happening on the policy front compared to the dumpster fire that has been the past two years.
Prior to 2016, I didn’t associate with any specific party. I still don’t but it’s no secret that I really dislike Trump. In my ideal world, politics wouldn’t be a bundle deal. For example, I believe in universal healthcare and I don’t think every crazy person should have guns. I also would LOVE some lower business taxes on the city level. City of Los Angeles charges my business an annual tax on our gross income. That means it doesn’t matter if you’ve paid payroll, or any other necessary write offs, you still have to pay the tax off the total income of your business. It’s crazy. If you ask me, the number one way to reduce taxes while still covering important things like universal healthcare is to reduce waste in the government. Our business deals with State and Federal government daily. Let’s just say there are plenty of opportunities to streamline things. I think Obama really had the right idea in that regard. Under his administration, there was a great deal of tech movement in healthcare which was cool.
Anyway, my point is I’m not a hard left and definitely not a hard right. HOWEVER for the purposes of this election, I don’t just swing left, I fucking Tarzan so far left I’m coming back around again. Man, I literally don’t care about anything but to check this crazy President and here’s why:
I think he wants to be Putin. He doesn’t have the brains for it but he has the Putin for it. For those of you who forgot what it was like in Russia, or never knew, let me remind you.
I never lived there but had family who did and were traumatized. We are not Russian. We’re Armenian. Which means we don’t look like the blond hair blue eyed cats that walk around there. My cousins had daily run ins with skin heads (you know, white nationalists) who wanted to beat them up every day on the way to school. Authorities didn’t really care much about them btw. Police pulled people over for no reason and just took them to jail unless they got paid kick backs. For all my Jews out there from Russia..you guys remember your families had to pretend to not be Jewish, like for safety? And how many Armenians are here who had to change their last name to end with -ov, like for safety? Gary fucking Kasparov anyone? Ivan Aivazovsky? It’s not all oligarchs and journalist murders over there. It’s also jail time for unpopular opinions if you have any form of audience. Remember the Pussy Riots? Everyday people have significant safety concerns. Even if it’s not about basic human safety, it’s about access to jobs and education for non-Russians. Sound familiar? And you know what they don’t have over there? Guns for daily citizens.
That’s what Trump wants. And he’s on his way to creating that. Because as long as we’re too busy arguing over this fucking caravan or his nicknames for politicians, we’re not noticing that he’s stripping away all our powers and rights as citizens. Like the right to breathe clean air or drink clean water. How about the right to vote? How many reports have there been of voter suppression this time around? And have you seen the legit level extreme gerrymandering? He also floated a while ago that he wants to postpone the next presidential election until this voter fraud thing gets figured out, but has never presented any proof for the voter fraud claim. He’s also pretty clear about “locking her up”. You know who else enacts revenge on his political opponents? Putin.
Don’t get me wrong. Putin has done wonders for the Russian economy which was in a horrifying state before he took over. And in that he’s raised the standard of living for many people in Russia. But have you visited Russia? Interacted with Russians (and non-Russians) who live in Russia? They’re cynical, and jaded, and beat up by life (and eachother). It’s not a better place or a better way and anyone who escaped from there will probably agree. That’s why the migration is generally a one way street. Unless they were in the Oligarch class. And then it’s great. But it’s only great for the uber rich. And that’s what Trump wants, because he doesn’t care about regular people. He cares about himself and his family. If the constitution was the only thing between him and $5 let’s just say he could stand in the middle of Times Square and shoot it dead and no one would do anything.
All I’m saying is this. Save the partisan politics for when there’s actually some form of policy on the line. Currently, there’s no substantial policy push from the right so it’s all just rhetoric. This election is about conserving YOUR rights. It’s about keeping things democratic so that we can have the chance to disagree over politics in the future. I’m voting Democrat because I want to make sure that my vote counts next time. And because I want to go back to a time where politics is a riveting intellectual sport, with legitimate, fact based discussions. Not a he said, she said cluster fuck. Also, I’m tired of seeing children slaughtered, but that’s a can of worms for another time. So whether you’re a Republican or Democrat, today, a blue vote is a you vote and a red vote is a dead vote.
